Artist's Comments

This is only my second attempt at painting - whether digitally or by traditional tools - a depiction of the legendary courtesan Amrapali

Fully digital painting created on Artrage, using grey charcoal on black paper.
No photoediting software has been used.
The photo reference is a beautiful picture by Athines of DA - I have added some jewelry in the portrait

About the character - Amrapali is a character from a folktale from India. She may actually have existed, and according to the story, was responsible for the defeat of an entire kingdom. The most famous novel that portrays her story (set in one of the world's earliest democratic kingdoms of India - circa 600 BC) is a Hindi work called "Vaishali ki Nagar-vadhu" by the author/historian Acharya Chatursen
